Four new councillors express surprise at appointment

KUCHING: Four of the 318 newly appointed local councillors were surprised by their appointment and pledged to work hard for their respective areas.

eza-Fizvy Hamad Rony Assim, 37, engineer, felt honoured and grateful for the opportunity to serve the people on the ground.

“This is very new for me and, at the same time, is a learning process. I wish to contribute to my level best,” he said when met after the swearing-in ceremony held at Pullman Kuching yesterday.

Reza is from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu and is a councillor for Dalat and Mukah District Council.

Commenting on the fixed RM300 monthly councillor allowance announced by the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the event, he said that it is good and welcomed, and thanked the chief minister for it.

Martin Bilun, 43, who retired as Warrant Officer 2 in March 2017, is from the PBB.

“I feel excited as it was unexpected. I plan to help the assemblymen especially Bukit Goram so that the development at the river upstream can be extended to rural area.”

He is appointed to Kapit District Council.

PBB member Rosita Jahari, 42, is happy and surprised to be chosen.

“Actually I’m still shocked. For our Matu and Daro District Council, we are in the midst of village development planning, for drainage and roads. We also plan to hold an Enterpreneur Carnival in the area.”

Tuing Gumba

Meanwhile, Tuing Gumba also expressed his shock and happiness with his appointment but thanked the Betong District Council.

He plans to work hand-in hand with the longhouses folk in Betong area to solve their problems.

“We plan to work on cleanliness, drainage and improve whatever that needs improvement.”

He expressed his gratitude on the chief minister’s announcement of the fixed allowance.

The RM300 fixed monthly allowance is on top of the Meetings Allowance which is received only based on the attendance. Previously, councillors did not have any fixed monthly allowance.

At the event, 721 councillors and council secretaries from 24 local councils throughout Sarawak were sworn in. Also present was Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
