SIBU: A Lake Development Authority will be set up to kick-start economic development in the Upper Rajang area with tourism activity as its main agenda.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, speaking at the delegate conference of PBB Zone 8 on Sunday, said the Upper Rajang area, with its rich flora and fauna and several hydro-electric dams surrounding it, could generate income for the state as it is a tourist attraction.

Zone 8 consisted of Pakan, Meluan, Ngemah, Machan, Tamin, Pelagus, Katibas, Bukit Goram and Baleh branches and a total of 1,200 members attended the conference.

Abang Johari, who is also state Barisan Nasional chairman and PBB president, said he would discuss about the need to form the authority with the state Cabinet next year.

Watersport activity, he said, could be promoted around the dam areas.

“If we use digital tools to promote Upper Rajang, people from around the world will be attracted to come to Kapit and Kuala Rajang, thus benefiting the people in the area,” he said.

The Chief Minister also gave his full support to the idea of a Mara Professional College in Kapit as requested by Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Alexander, who spoke on behalf of the delegates, said with the college, youths in the Kapit Division and surrounding area would have the opportunity to attend professional courses such as accountancy and banking, as the tuition fee would be borne by the college.

At the press conference, Abang Johari said as the party was responsible for launching the state transformation programme through digital economy agenda, all its branches would need to play their role in explaining this new policy to the people.

“They can also suggest the best way to implement the project so that the rural area especially could be transformed faster,” he said.

He cited as example Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who had come up with an innovative idea on how rubber trees could be used as a source of timber
